About Family Dollar
Founded in 1959 in Charlotte, NC by Leon Levine, Family Dollar is now one of the most ubiquitous discount variety store chains in the United States. It sells items such as clothing, home décor, cleaning supplies, cosmetics/personal care items, groceries, school supplies, seasonal items, and so much more—all at deeply discounted prices. As of 2015, Family Dollar has been owned by Dollar Tree, who now serves as the retailer’s parent company.
As of right now, Family Dollar has a total of around 8,000 locations in 46 of the 50 states (with Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington being the exceptions). However, it was announced in March of 2019 that 390 of the retailer’s locations are set to close by the end of the year. Meanwhile, around 200 of its locations are being re-branded as Dollar Tree stores.
